An out of state conviction for DUI will cause your Illinois driver’s license to become revoked for a period of 1 year if it is your first DUI.
If your DUI was in Illinois you generally receive a sentence of Court Supervision which is not a conviction, so your license is not revoked for 1 year (there is the Statutory Summary Suspension which is another issue). If you receive a conviction on your first Illinois DUI you would also have your illinois driver’s license revoked for a period of 1 year.
A revoked license is not reinstated automatically, you need to have an Informal Hearing with the Illinois Secretary of State to have your license reinstated.
An attorney that is experienced in Secretary of State hearings should be used when seeking reinstatement. As an attorney representing individuals at Secretary of State hearings for over 16 years I have seen too many attorneys who do not handle these hearings but do them anyways just for the money. They mess the case up and the client does not get his or her license back. Choose an attorney that has proven experience at Illinois Secretary of State hearings.
